It was part of the historic region [[Darvaz (region)|Darwaz]] which is now divided between [[Afghanistan]] and [[Tajikistan]]. In 2005 Darwaz District was subdivided into [[Maimay District]], [[Darwazi Bala District]], and [[Shekay District]].
