It was the ninth book featuring Sydney homicide detective Scobie Malone,<ref name=Austlit>{{cite web|title= Austlit — Scobie Malone series by Jon Cleary |publisher= Austlit|url=https://www.austlit.edu.au/austlit/page/C532613|access-date= 20 August 2025}}</ref> and begins with the discovery of a corpse in Scobie's swimming pool. The dead man was an informer involved in Scobie's recent drug investigation.
