{{Short description|none}} This is a list of mental disorders as defined in the DSM-IV, the fourth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Published by the American Psychiatry Association (APA), it was released in May 1994,<ref>{{Cite journal | first1=H. This list also includes updates featured in the text revision of the DSM-IV, the DSM-IV-TR, released in July 2000.<ref>{{Cite journal | first1=Michael B. | last1=First | first2=Harold Alan | last2=Pincus | title=The DSM-IV Text Revision: Rationale and Potential Impact on Clinical Practice | url=https://ps.psychiatryonline.org/doi/full/10.1176/appi.ps.53.3.288 | journal=Psychiatric Services | volume=53 | issue=3 | date=March 2002 | pages=288–292 | doi=10.1176/appi.ps.53.3.288| pmid=11875221 | url-access=subscription }}</ref>
Similar to the DSM-III-R, the DSM-IV-TR was created to bridge the gap between the DSM-IV and the next major release, then named DSM-V (eventually titled DSM-5).<ref>{{Cite book | title=Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision | publisher=American Psychiatric Association | date=July 2000 | page=xxix | ref={{harvid|DSM-IV-TR|2000}}}}</ref> The DSM-IV-TR contains expanded descriptions of disorders. Wordings were clarified and errors were corrected. The categorizations and the diagnostic criteria were largely unchanged. No new disorders or conditions were introduced, although a small number of subtypes were added and removed. ICD-9-CM codes that were changed since the release of IV were updated.<ref>{{Harvp|DSM-IV-TR|2000|p=829–843}}</ref> The DSM-IV and the DSM-IV-TR both contain a total of 297 mental disorders.<ref>{{Cite journal | first1=Alina | last1=Surís | first2=Ryan | last2=Holliday | first3=Carol S. | last3=North | title=The Evolution of the Classification of Psychiatric Disorders | journal=Behavioral Sciences | date=March 2016 | volume=6 | issue=1 | page=5 | doi=10.3390/bs6010005 | doi-access=free | pmid=26797641 | pmc=4810039 | quote=This rapid growth in numbers of diagnoses slowed, however, yielding 292 diagnoses in DSM-III-R, 297 in DSM-IV and DSM-IV-TR, and 298 in DSM-5}}</ref>
