Unionids are one of the most endangered fauna in the world due to water quality degradation and other human activities. Unionid reproductive strategies involve a parasitic life stage on a host fish and, in most species, involve lures that mimic prey to attract the host fish or amphibian, and the [[glochidia]] latch onto the host's gills for nutrients. The main types of natural fish lures: dispensing lures, trapping lures, conglutinate lures and mantle lures.<ref>{{Cite journal|title=Incongruence between mtDNA and nuclear data in the freshwater mussel genus Cyprogenia (Bivalvia: Unionidae) and its impact on species delineation|date=March 11, 2016|pmc=4788976|pmid=27066233|doi=10.1002/ece3.2071|volume=6|journal=Ecol Evol|pages=2439–52 | last1 = Chong | first1 = JP | last2 = Harris | first2 = JL | last3 = Roe | first3 = KJ|issue=8 |bibcode=2016EcoEv...6.2439C }}</ref>
