Virus-like particles have been found in a strain of one species, ''Cylindrocapsa geminella''.<ref>{{cite journal | doi=10.1139/b76-303 | title=Virus-like particles in the green alga ''Cylindrocapsa'' | date=1976 | last1=Hoffman | first1=Larry R. | last2=Stanker | first2=Larry H. | journal=Canadian Journal of Botany | volume=54 | issue=24 | pages=2827–2841 }}</ref>
==Description== ''Cylindrocapsa'' consists of unbranched filaments, often attached to substrates or free-floating in water. Cells are initially uniseriate (that is, in one line), but may later become multi-seriate or irregularly arranged. Individual cells are ovoid to oblong to spherical, and are each surrounded by several concentric layers of a mucilaginous sheath. Cells contain a single chloroplast filling the cell, with a single pyrenoid. The chloroplast may be axial (in the middle of the cell) or parietal (lining the wall of the cell).<ref name=John2014>{{cite book |editor-first1=John D.|editor-last1=Wehr|editor-first2=Robert G.|editor-last2=Sheath|editor-first3=J. ==Taxonomy== The placement of ''Cylindrocapsa'' is unclear. Species differ significantly from each other, both in terms of morphology and ultrastructure.<ref name=John2014/> It is therefore suspected to be polyphyletic.<ref name=AB_t43404/>
