The name of the hamlet derives from 'Cockermire', mentioned in 1619; a 'great stone' in the road, near the parish boundary, was then said to mark the site of the former Cockermire cross.
Businesses located at Crockey Hill include a car dealership, a veterinary surgery, a transport cafe and a fruit and vegetable stall. The York Designer Outlet is also nearby, situated at the intersection of the A19 and the A64, approximately 1 mile north of the village.{{Citation needed|date=September 2025}} The outdoor swimming venue Pool Bridge Farm is also located in the village.<ref name=":0">{{Cite web |date=2024-12-17 |title=Pool Bridge Farm plans to build bigger car park |url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cz7q1vygn2do |access-date=2025-03-14 |website=BBC News |language=en-GB}}</ref>
The A19 at Crockey Hill was a notorious blackspot with many people becoming injured or losing their lives in road traffic accidents. This led to traffic lights being installed at the junction linking the A19 to Wheldrake Lane in 2007.<ref>{{cite news|title=Crockey Hill junction campaigners celebrate|url=http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/1268469.Crockey_Hill_junction_campaigners_celebrate/|accessdate=21 August 2017|work=The York Press|date=19 March 2007}}</ref> The traffic lights have not proved entirely effective.<ref>{{cite news|title=Calls for action after latest crash on A19 at Crockey Hill near York|url=https://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/17493132.calls-for-action-after-latest-crash-on-a19-at-crockey-hill-near-york/|accessdate=9 August 2019|work=The York Press|date=12 March 2019}}</ref>
