These are deciduous trees with toothed leaves, bisexual flowers that lack petals, and winged capsules.<ref name=foc>[http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=108243 ''Craigia''.] Flora of China.</ref>

There are two extant species and three extinct species known from fossils.
