In June 2025, Covenant University drew public scrutiny following the death of Professor Joseph Olugbuyiro, a lecturer who had been previously dismissed by the institution. A report by Daily Trust stated that Professor Olugbuyiro's death, attributed to cancer, occurred after he was allegedly denied his terminal benefits, which his family claimed led to financial hardship affecting his medical treatment. The university did not issue an official response to inquiries from Daily Trust regarding the allegations.<ref>{{cite news |last=Trust |first=Daily |date=2025-06-12 |title=Covenant University Under Fire Over Death of Sacked Lecturer, Denied Terminal Benefits |url=https://dailytrust.com/covenant-university-under-fire-over-death-of-sacked-lecturer-denied-terminal-benefits/ |access-date=2025-06-13 |language=en-US|newspaper=Daily Trust}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web |last=Abatta |first=Abimbola |date=2025-05-22 |title=Covenant University Sacked Several Staff Without Paying Their Benefits.
