The '''Council of Portugal''', officially, the '''Royal and Supreme Council of Portugal''' (Portuguese: ''Real e Supremo Conselho de Portugal''), was the ruling body and a key part of the government of the Kingdom of Portugal during the Iberian Union. The council was founded in 1582 by Philip I of Portugal following the model of the Council of Castile.<ref>{{cite book|last=Lee|first=Stephen J.|title=Aspects of European history, 1494-1789|publisher=Psychology Press|year=1990|chapter=7|isbn=978-0-415-02784-7}}</ref> It provided Portugal with a large degree of autonomy from the House of Habsburg.<ref>{{cite book|last=Schwartz|first=Stuart B.|title=Sovereignty and society in colonial Brazil|publisher=University of California Press|year=1973|chapter=III|isbn=978-0-520-02195-2|url-access=registration|url=https://archive.org/details/sovereigntysocie0000schw}}</ref>

The council ceased to exist after the conclusion of the Portuguese Restoration War in 1668.
