The band took its name from an arcade in downtown Minneapolis which was open in the 1940s to 1960s.<ref name="ScholtesSeptember1998">{{Citation | last = Scholtes | first = Peter S. | title = Bring in the Noise - From Wrong's free-improv chaos to Savage Aural Hotbed's circle-saw precision, a disparate local noise scene maps the sound of modern anxiety | newspaper = City Pages | date = 9 September 1998 | url = http://www.citypages.com/1998-09-09/arts/bring-in-the-noise/full/ | url-status = dead | archiveurl = https://archive.today/20150423230627/http://www.citypages.com/1998-09-09/arts/bring-in-the-noise/full/ | archivedate = 23 April 2015 }}</ref><ref name="Billboard 1950">{{Citation | title = Coinmen You Know: Twin Cities | newspaper = Billboard | pages = 117 | date = 1 April 1950 | url = https://books.google.com/books?id=j_UDAAAAMBAJ&dq=Rifle+Sport+minneapolis&pg=PA117 | accessdate = 22 April 2015 }}</ref><ref name="Billboard 1964">{{Citation | title = Invoke Old Law Against Minneapolis Arcade Op | newspaper = Billboard | pages = 43 | date = 12 December 1964 | url = https://books.google.com/books?id=OSAEAAAAMBAJ&dq=Rifle+Sport+minneapolis&pg=PA43 | accessdate = 22 April 2015 }}</ref> An unrelated art gallery, Rifle Sport Gallery, also named after the arcade and housed in its old space, established their name after the band.<ref name="ScholtesSeptember1998"/>
