'''''Commensalibacter''''' is a genus of Gram-negative, aerobic and rod-shaped bacteria from the family of Acetobacteraceae which was originally isolated from'' Drosophila melanogaster.<ref name="Commensalibacter" /><ref name="Roh">{{cite journal|last1=Roh|first1=SW|last2=Nam|first2=Y-D|last3=Chang|first3=H-W|last4=Kim|first4=K-H|last5=Kim|first5=M-S|last6=Ryu|first6=J-H|last7=Kim|first7=S-H|last8=Jae|first8=W-J|last9=Bae|first9=J-W|date=2008|title=Phylogenetic characterization of two novel commensal bacteria involved with innate immune homeostasis in ''Drosophila melanogaster''.|journal=Applied and Environmental Microbiology|volume=74|issue=20|pages=6171–6177|doi=10.1128/AEM.00301-08|pmid=18723651|pmc=2570289|bibcode=2008ApEnM..74.6171R}}</ref>'' The complete genome of the type strain ''C. intestini'' A911{{sup|T}} has been sequenced.<ref name="Kim">{{cite journal|last1=Kim|first1=E-K|last2=Kim|first2=S-H|last3=Nam|first3=H-J|last4=Choi|first4=MK|last5=Lee|first5=K-A|last6=Choi|first6=S-H|last7=Seo|first7=YY|last8=Kim|first8=B|last9=Jae|first9=W-J|date=2012|title=Draft genome sequence of ''Commensalibacter intestini'' A911T, a symbiotic bacterium isolated from ''Drosophila melanogaster'' intestine.|journal=Journal of Bacteriology|volume=194|issue=5|page=1246|doi=10.1128/JB.06669-11|pmid=22328749|pmc=3294769}}</ref>

Currently, there are four species validly named: ''Commensalibacter intestini'', ''Commensalibacter communis'', ''Commensalibacter melissae'', and ''Commensalibacter papalotli''. ''C. communis'' was recently isolated from the gut of bumble bees, butterflies, fruits, and hornets. ''C. melissae'' was exclusively isolated from honeybees. Its smaller genome compared to other ''Commensalibacter'' species suggests a unique evolutionary process. ''C. papalotli'' has been isolated from the monarch butterfly, other butterflies, and has also been isolated from the Asian hornet.<ref name=Botero >{{cite journal |last1=Botero |first1=Juliana |last2=Vandamme |first2=Peter |title=Proposal of three novel insect-associated Commensalibacter species: Commensalibacter melissae sp. nov., Commensalibacter communis sp. nov. and Commensalibacter papalotli sp. nov. |journal=International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology |date=2024 |volume=74 |issue=1 |page=006224 |doi=10.1099/ijsem.0.006224}}</ref><ref>{{cite journal |last1=Botero |first1=Juliana |last2=Sombolestani |first2=Atena Sadat |last3=Cnockaert |first3=Margo |last4=Peeters |first4=Charlotte |last5=Borremans |first5=Wim |last6=De Vuyst |first6=Luc |last7=Vereecken |first7=Nicolas J. |last8=Michez |first8=Denis |last9=Smagghe |first9=Guy |last10=Bonilla-Rosso |first10=German |last11=Engel |first11=Philipp |last12=Vandamme |first12=Peter |title=A phylogenomic and comparative genomic analysis of Commensalibacter, a versatile insect symbiont |journal=Animal Microbiome |date=29 April 2023 |volume=5 |issue=1 |page=25 |doi=10.1186/s42523-023-00248-6|doi-access=free |pmid=37120592 |pmc=10149009 }}</ref>
