==History== Cleveland was established as a village in 1854, and incorporated as a city in 1904.<ref name="clevelandmn.govoffice2.com"/> The community was named after Cleveland, Ohio.<ref>{{cite web|url= http://www.epodunk.com/cgi-bin/genInfo.php?locIndex=20935|title= Profile for Cleveland, Minnesota, MN|publisher= ePodunk|accessdate= October 4, 2012|archive-date= May 14, 2019|archive-url= https://web.archive.org/web/20190514163034/http://epodunk.com/cgi-bin/genInfo.php?locIndex=20935|url-status= dead}}</ref>

Under its original founders, Cleveland was a temperance town and thus voted no licensing of saloons in the town.<ref>{{Cite web | url=https://books.google.com/books?id=INwpAAAAYAAJ&q=vote+no+license+temperance&pg=PT36 |title = The Reform Bulletin: A Weekly Report from the New York Legislature, Concerning the Progress of All Moral Reforms Before that Body|year = 1910}}</ref>

In 1859, Cleveland and nearby Le Sueur began a heated rivalry over the role of the Le Sueur county seat. The rivalry continued with only minor bloodshed until 1875, when a group of Cleveland citizens organized a militia to take the county seat by force. The militia retrieved the county seat from Le Sueur. After more than year of holding the county seat, Le Center agreed to take the seat where remains today. <ref>{{cite book | url=https://archive.org/details/historyofminneso00nort | page=[https://archive.org/details/historyofminneso00nort/page/480 480] | quote=cleveland. |title = History of the Minnesota Valley: Including the Explorers and Pioneers of Minnesota| publisher=North star publishing Company |last1 = Neill|first1 = Edward Duffield|year = 1882}}</ref>
