==Etymology== The name is derived from the personal name Chvalata, meaning "the village of Chvalata's people".<ref>{{cite book |last=Profous|first=Antonín|title=Místní jména v Čechách II: CH–L|url=https://mjc.ujc.cas.cz/search.php|page=73|year=1949|language=cs}}</ref>

==Geography== Chvaletice is located about {{convert|25|km}} west of Pardubice. It lies in the Polabí region; the northern part of the municipal territory lies in the East Elbe Table and the southern part lies in the northwestern tip of the Iron Mountains. The highest point is the flat hill Oklika at {{convert|308|m|ft|abbr=on}} above sea level. The Elbe River forms the northern municipal border.

==History== In the area there were originally two villages, Telčice and Chvaletice, both administered by Chvaletice. The first written mention of Telčice comes from 1143 and of Chvaletice from 1393.<ref>{{cite web |title=Telčice, Chvaletice (společné osudy)|url=https://www.chvaletice.cz/telcice%2Dchvaletice%2Dspolecne%2Dosudy/d-1453/p1=3959|publisher=Město Chvaletice|language=cs|access-date=2021-10-13}}</ref>

In 1981, Chvaletice obtained town rights.<ref>{{cite web |title=Velké stěhování|url=https://www.chvaletice.cz/velke%2Dstehovani/d-1463/p1=3969|publisher=Město Chvaletice|language=cs|access-date=2021-10-13}}</ref>

==Economy== Since ancient times, iron ore was mined here, until the Thirty Years' War; then again since the end of 18th century. Mining of pyrite-manganese ore started in the 20th century. To make such shipping possible large excavation works (Elbe Waterway project) on the riverbed were carried out. Use of ships stopped in 1996.<ref>{{cite web |title=Chvaletice jsou už samostatné|url=https://pardubicky.denik.cz/podnikani/chvaletice-jsou-uz-samostatne20101027.html|publisher=Deník.cz|language=cs|date=2010-10-27|access-date=2021-10-13}}</ref>
