Pitcher was born at Croydon in August 1973 and later studied at Selwyn College, Cambridge.<ref>{{cite book |title=The Cambridge University List of Members |date=1991 |publisher=Cambridge University Press |pages=1071 |url=https://books.google.com/books?id=05AcAQAAMAAJ |language=en}}</ref> While studying at Cambridge, he made his debut in first-class cricket for Cambridge University against Leicestershire at Fenner's in 1992.
