The award was instituted in 1978 by Cherukad Smaraka Trust at Perinthalmanna, Kerala, India. It is named after Malayalam playwright, poet, novelist, and political activist '''Cherukad Govinda Pisharodi'''. The award comprises ₹25,000 and a citation.
