{{Short description|Bodily function in animals that occurs primarily in response to cold}} {{For|the wind-up toy|Chattering teeth (toy)}} '''Chattering teeth''' is a bodily function in animals that occurs primarily in response to cold; the jaw muscles begin to shiver leading teeth to crash together. It may also occur as a result of bruxism where emotional stress causes the jaw movements. Certain medications can lead to teeth chattering as a side effect, especially antipsychotics and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.<ref>{{cite journal |last1=Colantuoni |first1=Carlo |last2=Rada |first2=Pedro |last3=McCarthy |first3=Joseph |last4=Patten |first4=Caroline |last5=Avena |first5=Nicole M. |last6=Chadeayne |first6=Andrew |last7=Hoebel |first7=Bartley G. |title=Evidence That Intermittent, Excessive Sugar Intake Causes Endogenous Opioid Dependence |journal=Obesity Research |date=June 2002 |volume=10 |issue=6 |pages=478–488 |doi=10.1038/oby.2002.66|pmid=12055324 |url=http://www.saber.ula.ve/handle/123456789/16164 |doi-access=free }}</ref><ref>{{cite journal |last1=Preuschoft |first1=Signe |title="Laughter" and "Smile" in Barbary Macaques (Macaca sylvanus) |journal=Ethology |date=26 April 2010 |volume=91 |issue=3 |pages=220–236 |doi=10.1111/j.1439-0310.1992.tb00864.x}}</ref><ref>{{cite journal |last1=Hammond |first1=Paula |last2=Lillie |first2=Stephen |title=T is for our chattering teeth… |journal=Child Care |date=2 December 2017 |volume=14 |issue=12 |pages=14–15 |doi=10.12968/chca.2017.14.12.14}}</ref><ref>{{cite journal |last1=Miles |first1=Timothy S. |title=Postural control of the human mandible |journal=Archives of Oral Biology |date=April 2007 |volume=52 |issue=4 |pages=347–352 |doi=10.1016/j.archoralbio.2006.12.017|pmid=17257577 }}</ref><ref>{{cite journal |last1=Wiper |first1=Susan M. |last2=Semple |first2=Stuart |title=The function of teeth chattering in male Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) |journal=American Journal of Primatology |date=October 2007 |volume=69 |issue=10 |pages=1179–1188 |doi=10.1002/ajp.20434|pmid=17358007 |s2cid=22306315 }}</ref><ref>{{cite journal |last1=Lammers |first1=J.H.C.M. |last2=Kruk |first2=M.R. |last3=Meelis |first3=W. |last4=van der Poel |first4=A.M. |title=Hypothalamic substrates for brain stimulation-induced attack, teeth-chattering and social grooming in the rat |journal=Brain Research |date=May 1988 |volume=449 |issue=1–2 |pages=311–327 |doi=10.1016/0006-8993(88)91046-3|pmid=3395851 |s2cid=7907529 }}</ref>
