She was an editor at Jonathan Cape in 1996–1997 and at Headline Review in 1998–2014.<ref name=":0"/>
Mendelson has been a visiting professor of creative writing at Royal Holloway, University of London, since 2017 and a gardening correspondent at the ''New Yorker'' since the same year. She became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2018.<ref name=":0"/>
