Kettle was born in [[Dunedin]] on 4 June 1850,<ref name=ci/> the son of [[Charles Kettle|Charles Henry Kettle]].<ref name="EP obituary">{{cite news |url=https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/EP19181218.2.58 |title=Death of Mr. C. Kettle played first-class cricket four times for Otago against [[Canterbury cricket team|Canterbury]], once in each of the representative matches played in the years between 1868–69 and 1871–72. At the time these were the only first-class matches played in New Zealand.
