Prior to this, she was a biathlete for five years. She was born in Canmore, Alberta, Canada.

==Career== On February 22, 2006, she became the surprise gold medal winner in the women's cross-country {{convert|1.1|km|mi|1|abbr=on}} sprint at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. Video of her circulated on the Internet as she sang "O Canada", the Canadian national anthem, from the medals podium. Then-CBC commentator Brian Willams said of the event: "If you're ever standing on top of the podium, ''this'' is how you sing our national anthem."

She won her first World Cup gold medal in her home-town of Canmore in January 2008 in the sprint event, followed by a second gold in Lahti, Finland, in March 2008. Crawford placed 44th in the freestyle sprint during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. On March 27, 2014, she retired from competitive skiing.
