The group consisted of four members: Mana, Kana, Yuuki and Yuna. Formed in 2012, the band released their debut studio album, ''Pink'', in 2017. They announced their breakup in 2024.

Chai was produced and managed domestically by Jisedai and managed internationally by Antinos Management America, both subsidiaries of their label, Sony Music Entertainment Japan.

==Biography==

Chai was formed in 2012 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, by twin sisters Mana and Kana, alongside Yuna and Yuuki.<ref name="bandbiographyeng">{{cite web | url=https://chai-band.com/en/biography/ | title=BIOGRAPHY |publisher=Otemoyan Record | language=Japanese | accessdate=August 19, 2018}}</ref> Mana, Kana, and Yuna are all from Nagoya, and were in the same class at high school.<ref name="BabyG">{{cite web | url=https://baby-g.jp/girlsparty/217/ | title=With BABY-G Vol.20 ニュー・エキサイト・オンナバンド CHAI |work=Girl's Party |publisher=CASIO COMPUTER | language=Japanese |date=November 16, 2017 | accessdate=September 2, 2018}}</ref> The three were members of the light music club at their high school, performing covers of musicians such as Tokyo Jihen and Aiko.<ref name="natalie1-pg2">{{cite web | url=https://natalie.mu/music/pp/chai/page/2 | title=CHAI「PINK」インタビュー | language=Japanese |author=Fumiaki Amano | publisher=Natalie | date=October 25, 2017 | accessdate=September 1, 2018}}</ref> Yuna introduced the other band members to Japanese music that did not easily fit into the traditional definition of "J-Pop", such as the band Cero or Kimyō Reitaro.<ref name="natalie1-pg2"/>

After the members graduated and went to university, Mana became friends with Yuuki (originally from Gifu Prefecture, who had moved to Nagoya), and asked the four friends to form a band.<ref name="BabyG" /><ref name="CDJournalInterview">{{cite web | url=https://www.cdjournal.com/main/cdjpush/chai/1000001141 | title=インタビュー:名古屋発ニュー・エキサイト・オンナバンド、CHAIを直撃 - CDJournal CDJ PUSH |publisher=CDJournal | language=Japanese |date=December 18, 2015 | accessdate=September 11, 2018}}</ref> The band's name comes from Russian tea (known as ''chai''). Chai decided early in their career to pursue music globally, and they considered it strange that many Japanese musical acts only focused on selling music domestically.<ref name="natalie1-pg3">{{cite web | url=https://natalie.mu/music/pp/chai/page/3 | title=CHAI「PINK」インタビュー | language=Japanese |author=Fumiaki Amano | publisher=Natalie | date=October 25, 2017 | accessdate=September 1, 2018}}</ref> The band completed their second tour of the US in March.<ref name="bandbiography" /> In the UK, Chai was signed to Heavenly Recordings and toured the country in October as a support act for Superorganism.<ref>{{cite web | url=http://diymag.com/2018/08/21/chai-neo-debut-album-pink-heavenly-recordings-neu-pick-listen | title=NEW HEAVENLY SIGNINGS CHAI MAKE AN ELECTRIFYING INTRODUCTION ON 'N.E.O.' |publisher=DIY |date=August 21, 2018 | accessdate=September 2, 2018}}</ref> In February 2019, the band released their second studio album ''Punk''.

Chai announced in January 2024 that they would disband following their next Japanese tour, which ended that March.
