It had previously been classified as a subspecies of the Humboldt's white-fronted capuchin (''C. albifrons''). Spix's white-fronted capuchin has a wide range within the upper Amazon Basin in Brazil and Peru.<ref name=handbook/> It also occurs in northern Bolivia.<ref name=handbook/> It has a head and body length between {{convert|36.5|and|37.5|cm|in|lk=on|abbr=on}} and a tail length of between {{convert|42|and|46|cm|in|lk=on|abbr=on}}.<ref name=handbook/>
