Camp Clinton was home to 3,000 German and Italian POWs, most of whom had been captured in Africa and were members of the Afrika Korps.
The prisoners at Camp Clinton provided labor to build the Mississippi River Basin Model, a one-square-mile working replica model of the Mississippi River and its tributaries, which the United States Army Corps of Engineers used for planning flood control projects.<ref name="Skates">{{Cite web |last=Skates |first=John Ray Jr. |date=September 2001 |title=German Prisoners of War in Mississippi 1943–1946 |url=https://www.mshistorynow.mdah.ms.gov/issue/german-prisoners-of-war-in-mississippi-1943-1946 |url-status=live |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220216214936/https://www.mshistorynow.mdah.ms.gov/issue/german-prisoners-of-war-in-mississippi-1943-1946 |archive-date=2022-02-16 |access-date=2022-03-28 |website=Mississippi History Now |language=en}}</ref><ref>{{Cite book |last=Ettema |first=R. |url={{GBurl|id=A4JRAAAAMAAJ|p=19}} |title=Hydraulic Modeling: Concepts and Practice |date=2000 |publisher=ASCE Publications |isbn=978-0-7844-0415-7 |pages=19–20 |lccn=00026969 |ol=11031532M}}</ref>
