Elder started his professional career at Leicester City, but failed the make a first team appearance, he would have loan spells at Mansfield Town, Peterborough United, Brentford, Barnsley, Wigan Athletic and Ipswich Town. In August 2019, Elder would join Hull City, where he would spend four years, before signing with Derby County in June 2023, he will leave the club upon the expiry of his contract in June 2026.
