The '''CRC Press''' is a publishing imprint principally for technical books. Many of its books are related to engineering, science and mathematics. Its scope also includes books on business, forensics and information technology. In 2003 the imprint was acquired by Taylor & Francis, a subsidiary of Informa. The CRC Press and Routledge imprints are key components of Taylor & Francis's academic publishing.<ref>{{Cite web|title = About Us: Taylor & Francis key brands: Routledge and CRC Press |url = https://www.routledge.com/corporate/about-us |access-date = 2025-07-30}}</ref> As of 2025, the branding of CRC Press presents it as part of the Routledge branding.<!--The crcpress.com domain now redirects to https://www.routledge.com/corporate/about-us/crc-press ; the branding there is framed as part of the Routledge branding.-->

== History == The CRC Press originated as the publishing component of the '''Chemical Rubber Company''' ('''CRC''') in 1903 by brothers Arthur, Leo and Emanuel Friedman in Cleveland, Ohio, based on an earlier enterprise by Arthur, who had begun selling rubber laboratory aprons in 1900.<ref name=":0">{{Cite encyclopedia|title = Crc Press, Inc. |encyclopedia=Encyclopedia of Cleveland History |url = http://ech.case.edu/cgi/article.pl?id=CPI1|publisher =Case Western Reserve University|access-date = 2015-11-11}}</ref><ref name=":1">{{Cite web|title = CRC Press-Taylor & Francis Group |url = http://engineeringeducationsuppliersguide.com/Listing/Company/Reference_Materials__Resources/Conference_Proceedings/11564 |publisher = Engineering Education Suppliers Guide |access-date = 2015-11-11}}</ref> The company gradually expanded to include sales of laboratory equipment to chemists. In 1913 the CRC offered a short (116-page) manual called the ''Rubber Handbook'' as an incentive for any purchase of a dozen aprons.<ref name=":1" /><ref name=CRCcorphist/> Since then the ''Rubber Handbook'' has evolved into the CRC's flagship book, the ''CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics''.<ref name=CRCcorphist/> Another one of CRC's highly successful reference handbooks, ''CRC Standard Mathematical Tables'', has sold over 2 million copies.<ref>{{cite web |last=Zwillinger |first=Daniel |title=Standard Mathematical Tables and Formulae |website= mathtable.com |url=http://www.mathtable.com/smtf/ |access-date=2024-08-09}}</ref>

In 1964, Chemical Rubber decided to focus on its publishing ventures, and in 1973 the company changed its name to CRC Press, Inc, and exited the manufacturing business, spinning off that line as the Lab Apparatus Company.<ref name=":0" /><ref name=CRCcorphist>{{cite web |url-status=dead |url=http://www.crcpress.com/corphistory.asp |title=CRC Press Pioneers in Publishing |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20090125113430/http://crcpress.com/corphistory.asp |archive-date=2009-01-25 |access-date=5 April 2009 |website=CRC Press Online }}</ref>

In 1986, CRC Press was bought by the Times Mirror Company.<ref>{{Cite news|title = Times Mirror to Buy Broadcasting Magazine and CRC|url = https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1986-11-29-fi-16025-story.html|newspaper = Los Angeles Times|date = 1986-11-29|access-date = 2015-11-11|issn = 0458-3035|language = en-US|first1 = THOMAS B.|last1 = ROSENSTIEL|first2 = DAVID|last2 = CROOK}}</ref> Times Mirror began exploring the possibility of a sale of CRC Press in 1996, and in December announced the sale of CRC to Information Ventures.<ref>{{Cite news|title = Times Mirror Plans To Explore Options For Book Divisions|last = Rose|first = Frederick|date = 13 March 1996|work = The Wall Street Journal|publisher = Dow Jones & Company, Inc.|id = {{ProQuest|398469483}}}}</ref><ref>{{Cite news|title = Times Mirror reorganization completed, Willes says|last = Millot|first = Jim|date = 16 December 1996|work = Publishers Weekly|publisher = PWxyz|id = {{ProQuest|196995160}}}}</ref> In 2003, CRC became part of Taylor & Francis, which in 2004 became part of the UK publisher Informa.<ref name="CRCcorphist" /><ref>{{Cite journal|title = Taylor & Francis to acquire CRC Press|date = 10 March 2003|journal = Publishers Weekly|publisher = PWxyz|issue = 10|volume = 250|id = {{ProQuest|197067794}}}}</ref>
