It is currently used for football matches and is the home stadium of CD Leganés.

==History and characteristics== The stadium shares its name (Butarque) with that of the main water stream passing through Leganés ({{ill|Arroyo Butarque|es}}), with that of the patron saint of the municipality, and with that of a public park in the stadium's surroundings.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://elpais.com/diario/1996/12/12/madrid/850393465_850215.html|publisher=El País|language=es|date=12 December 1996 |access-date=5 June 2016 |title=El nuevo estadio del Lega se llamará Butarque |trans-title= The New Stadium of Lega will be called Butarque }}</ref> The stadium was built between 1997 and 1998 with the aim to replace the old field in the city, the Estadio Luis Rodríguez de Miguel. Butarque was inaugurated on 14 February 1998, with a game between Leganés and Xerez.

With an original capacity of 8,138, Butarque was expanded to 10,954 seats divided into four sectors after Leganés’ promotion to La Liga in 2016.<ref name="capacidad">{{cite news|title=Instalaciones|url=http://www.deportivoleganes.com/club/instalaciones|editor=Club Deportivo Leganés|language=es|date=14 September 2016|access-date=14 September 2016|archive-date=5 May 2018|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180505165201/https://www.deportivoleganes.com/club/instalaciones|url-status=dead}}</ref>

On 29 April 2016, the mayor of Leganés suggested an expansion of Butarque to 12,000 seats and also access improvements to the stadium.<ref>{{cite web |url= http://somoslega.com/2016/04/el-nuevo-butarque-tendra-12-000-asientos/ |publisher= Somos Lega |language=es |access-date= 5 June 2016 |date= 29 April 2016 |title=El Nuevo Butarque tendrá 12.000 asientos |trans-title= The New Butarque will have 12,000 seats}}</ref>

With the next expansion, the stadium had a capacity of 12,454 spectators.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://alcabodelacalle.es/el-cd-leganes-pulveriza-un-ano-mas-su-record-de-abonados-y-lo-eleva-a-10-300 |title=El CD Leganés pulveriza un año más su récord de abonados y lo eleva a 10.300 |publisher=Al cabo de la calle |access-date=11 September 2018 |language=es}}</ref> In 2024 some seats were added to reach a capacity of 13,089 spectators.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://as.com/futbol/primera/butarque-amplia-levemente-su-aforo-hasta-los-13089-asientos-n/|title=Butarque amplia levemente su aforo hasta los 13.089 asientos|publisher=As.com|access-date=21 December 2024}}</ref>

Butarque, apart from football matches, has hosted musical concerts and festivals like Festimad.
