In 1086 Burstock was recorded in the [[Domesday Book]] as 'Bureuuinestoch',<ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.domesdaybook.co.uk/dorset1.html |title=Dorset A-G |publisher=domesdaybook.co.uk |work=The Domesday Book Online |accessdate=25 February 2015}}</ref> meaning a farm ('stoc') owned by either 'Burgwine' (a man) or 'Burgwynn' (a woman).<ref name=OPC>{{cite web|url=http://www.opcdorset.org/BurstockFiles/Burstock.htm|title=Burstock|publisher=Dorset OPC Project|accessdate=14 January 2014}}</ref> It had 12 households, 8 acres of meadow and 3 [[ploughland]]s. Before the [[Dissolution of the Monasteries]] in the mid 16th century, Burstock was closely associated with the [[Cistercians|Cistercian monks]] at nearby [[Forde Abbey]]; at Whetham, in the north of the parish, the abbey developed a mill, and in 1316 the Abbot became Burstock's lord of the manor.<ref name=OPC/>
