==History and structure== The name "Bukui" is the Chinese transcription of a Daur word meaning "auspicious".<ref name="Mook"/> Bukui Mosque originally consisted of two separate mosques:<ref name="QiqiharNews"/> *The East Mosque, a three-storey, {{convert|374|m2|sqft|adj=on}} building constructed in Kangxi 23 (1684), predating the city of Qiqihar by seven years<ref name="QiqiharNews"/> *The West Mosque, a two-storey, {{convert|173|m2|sqft|adj=on}} building constructed in Xianfeng 3 (1852) by followers of the Jahriyya menhuan who immigrated from Gansu<ref name="Mook"/><ref name="QiqiharNews"/> The mosque contains approximately {{convert|2000|m2}} of constructed space; the whole compound covers an area of approximately {{convert|6400|m2}}. The two prayer spaces together can hold approximately 450 worshipers.<ref name="QiqiharNews"/>

The mosque's long history has led to a saying in Qiqihar: "the mosque existed long before the town Bukui".{{#tag:ref|{{zh|s=先有清真寺,后有卜奎城 |t=先有清真寺,後有卜奎城 |p=Xiān yǒu qīngzhēnsì, hòu yǒu Bǔkuíchéng.}}|group=n}}<ref>{{citation |periodical=China Central Television |date=2005-08-29 |access-date=2010-09-11 |url=http://www.cctv.com/program/happychina/20050829/101432.shtml |language=zh |script-title=zh:齐齐哈尔第三集|title=|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20071115115124/http://www.cctv.com/program/happychina/20050829/101432.shtml|archive-date=2007-11-15}}</ref> In 1958, the two mosques were reorganised as a single mosque, with the name "Qiqihar Mosque". The mosque was listed as a city-level protected cultural relic in 1980, and as a provincial-level protected cultural relic in 1981; its name was then also changed to the present "Bukui Mosque".<ref name="QiqiharNews"/>

An assessment completed in 1981 found that while the East Mosque was in relatively good condition, there was serious structural damage to the West Mosque.<ref>{{citation |url=http://www.cnki.com.cn/Article/CJFDTOTAL-XXTS198103024.htm |last1=Liu |first1=Peilin (刘沛霖) |language=zh |script-title=zh:卜奎清真寺 |script-work=zh:学习与探索 |year=1981 |issue=3 |access-date=2010-09-11|title=|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20110716152819/http://www.cnki.com.cn/Article/CJFDTOTAL-XXTS198103024.htm|archive-date=2011-07-16}}</ref>{{Dead link|date=April 2025}} Reconstruction efforts were undertaken in 1989–1990.<ref name="CCH"/> On 25 June 2006, the Bukui Mosque was entered onto the list of Chinese major cultural heritage sites of national significance.<ref name="CCH"/>
