'''Buba''' is the largest city in southern Guinea-Bissau and the capital of the Quinara region. It lies on the extreme end of the Rio Grande de Buba, near the Contanhez National Park, and has a population 6,815 (2008 est).<ref>{{cite web|url=http://world-gazetteer.com/wg.php?x%3D%26men%3Dgcis%26lng%3Den%26des%3Dwg%26srt%3Dnpan%26col%3Dabcdefghinoq%26msz%3D1500%26geo%3D-95 |accessdate=2008-06-16 }}{{dead link|date=July 2021|bot=medic}}{{cbignore|bot=medic}}</ref>
==History== The area that is now Buba was once a part of the Biafada kingdom of Biguba. The city's name is a corruption of this state, although the modern town was not prominent until the 19th century.<ref name=Mendy/>
Buba was the most important commercial center in Portuguese Guinea from the early 1840s to the late 1870s.<ref name=Mendy>{{cite book |first1=Richard Andrew Jr. |last1=Lobban |first2=Peter Karibe |last2=Mendy |title=Historical Dictionary of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau |edition=4th |publisher=Scarecrow Press |year=2013 |place=Lanham |isbn=978-0-8108-5310-2|page=62-4}}</ref> During a civil war in Forria in the late 19th century Fula ''rimbe'' (noble) forces attacked Buba looking for escaped slaves, who had fled to the town for Portuguese protection. The instability led to a collapse in the peanut trade, crushing the town's economy.<ref>{{cite thesis |last=Glovsky |first=David |date=2020 |title=Belonging beyond boundaries : constructing a transnational community in a West African borderland |doi=10.25335/4hjk-3y48 |type=PhD |chapter= |publisher= Michigan State University|docket= |oclc= |page=86}}</ref> By the time the Portuguese had established control over the entire area, the economic heart of the colony had moved to Bissau and Bafata, leaving Buba a backwater.<ref name=Mendy/>
The Portuguese constructed an army camp in Buba, which, shortly after independence, was used as the headquarters for a Dutch Foreign Aid Project aimed at providing the villages of Quinara and Tombali with safe drinking water. The construction of a plywood factory through Swedish Foreign Aid in 1982 boosted the economy and growth of Buba, as it installed a steam engine which produced enough electricity to supply the whole town.{{Citation needed|date=June 2007}} During his presidency, former President of Guinea-Bissau Kumba Yala planned to move the capital city to Buba.<ref>{{Cite news|url=https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/2970627.stm|title=BBC NEWS {{!}} Africa {{!}} Capital change for Guinea-Bissau|website=news.bbc.co.uk|date=23 April 2003 |access-date=2017-07-13}}</ref> Those plans have been dropped since he was deposed in a coup d'état.
==Economy== Construction was planned for a new railway, road, and deepwater port that could host three 70-tonne vessels at any given time, built by Angola Bauxite in order to export bauxite.<ref>{{Cite news |url=https://www.reuters.com/article/bissau-angola-bauxite-idUSL6E8JNHFM20120823 |title=Bissau government to review Angola Bauxite deal, calls it unfair |newspaper=Reuters |date=23 August 2012 |access-date=2017-06-30 |archive-date=2015-09-24 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20150924170322/http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/08/23/bissau-angola-bauxite-idUSL6E8JNHFM20120823 |url-status=live }}</ref> The 2012 Guinea-Bissau coup d'état saw the project suspended.<ref name=Mendy/>
