With the construction of the Kiel Canal ({{langx|de|Nord-Ostsee-Kanal}}) in 1911, the town was divided in two.

Alle Bemühungen, den Deich zu schließen, führten nach einem Rückschlag durch die [[Neujahrsflut 1721]] mit einem Umgehungsdeich erst zu einer langjährigen Ausdeichung und 1762 schließlich zum Deichschluss an der Bruchstelle. Der dadurch entstandene Brunsbüttel-Eddelaker-Koog erhielt 1772 die politische Selbstständigkeit durch den [[Dänemark|dänischen]] König [[Christian VII. (Dänemark und Norwegen)|Christian VII.]] Mit dem Beginn des Baus des Nord-Ostsee-Kanals 1911 wurde Brunsbüttel geteilt.1907 erfolgte die Umbenennung des Brunsbüttel-Eddelaker-Koogs in Brunsbüttelkoog, das im Jahre 1948 Stadtrecht erhielt. Januar 1970 entstand aus Brunsbüttelkoog und den Gemeinden Brunsbüttel, Mühlenstraßen, [[Ostermoor (Brunsbüttel)|Ostermoor]], Osterbelmhusen, Westerbelmhusen (des früheren Kirchspiels Brunsbüttel) und Westerbüttel (des früheren Kirchspiels Eddelak) die Stadt Brunsbüttel.
