Plewe earned his Ph.D. in geography from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1997. Plewe has been a professor at Brigham Young University since 1996 and has been an associate professor since 2014.<ref name="Plewe1"/><ref name="Plewe2" /><ref name="Ensign1" /> He has taught geography and courses related to Geographic information systems there since 1997.<ref name="Plewe1"/><ref name="Plewe2" /><ref name="Ensign1" /> He served as the president of the North American Cartographic Information Society (NACIS) between 2008 and 2009.<ref name="NACIS1">{{cite web |title=Past officers |url=https://nacis.org/our-society/leadership/alumni/ |website=NACIS |access-date=29 June 2023}}</ref> He served as the president of the Cartography and Geographic Information Society (CaGIS) between 2005 and 2006.<ref name="Plewe2" />
