It is about {{convert|1|mi|km|1}} north from Maltby and {{convert|3|mi|km|0}} south-east from Conisbrough. According to the 2001 Census the civil parish had a population of 1,056,<ref>{{NOMIS2001|title=Braithwell Parish|id=00CE010|accessdate=21 February 2020}}</ref> increasing slightly to 1,060 at the 2011 Census.<ref name="2011 census">{{NOMIS2011|id=E04000066|title=Braithwell Parish |accessdate=21 February 2020}}</ref>

The name Braithwell derives from the Old English ''brādwella'' meaning 'broad well'. ''Brād'' was later replaced by the Old Norse ''breiðr''.<ref>{{cite web|url=http://kepn.nottingham.ac.uk/map/place/Yorkshire+WR/Braithwell|title=Key to English Place-names|website=kepn.nottingham.ac.uk|accessdate=7 October 2025}}</ref>

In 1289, the village obtained a Royal Charter entitling it to hold a weekly Tuesday market and an annual eight-day fair – an unusually long duration. These were long discontinued by a survey of 1652, but a cross shaft survives with an inscription in Norman French which translates as "Jesus, son of Mary, think upon the brother of our king, I beseech you".<ref>{{cite book|author-link=David Hey|last=Hey|first= David|title=Medieval South Yorkshire|publisher= Landmark Publishing Ltd |year=2003|isbn=1843060809}}{{page needed|date=March 2015}}</ref>

The Church of St James in the village is a Grade II* listed building.<ref>{{NHLE|num=1286514|desc=Church of St James|accessdate=21 February 2020}}</ref>
