{{Short description|Combination of bouldering and orienteering}} {{Refimprove section|date=April 2024}} '''Bouldergaine''' is a sport that combines bouldering and rogaining.<ref>{{Cite web |title=CASTLE HILL BOULDERGAINE (A ROGAINE WITH SOME BOULDERING) RESULTS |url=https://papo.org.nz/events/results/13/castle-hill-bouldergaine-a-rogaine-with-some-bouldering |access-date=2024-04-19 |website=Peninsula and Plains Orienteers}}</ref>

The sport takes place in a large boulder field, which is mapped in a similar way to a traditional rogaine. Teams of 2 people choose which checkpoints to visit within a time limit with the intent of maximizing their score. At each checkpoint is at least one extra bonus point station, which requires scrambling or climbing to access. A successful team will require a mixture of fitness, climbing ability and map skills.{{cn|date=April 2024}}

The world's first bouldergaine was held on March 15, 2014, at Kura Tawhiti / Castle Hill in Canterbury, New Zealand. The event was organised by the New Zealand Alpine Club,<ref>{{cite web|title=Contour Lines|url=http://papo.org.nz/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/2013-12-December.pdf|publisher=papo.org}}</ref> with over 100 participants.<ref>{{cite web|title=NBS Website|date=11 May 2020 |url=http://nbs.org.nz/news/2014/worlds-first-bouldergaine-a-success|publisher=nbs.org.nz}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|title=Stuff.co.nz|date=14 March 2014 |url=http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/9830768}}</ref>
