In 1992, Bomet District was created after southern regions of Kericho District were hived off to create an additional district.<ref>{{Cite web |date=25 September 2015 |title=46 Districts of 1993|url=https://www.ustawi.info.ke/index.php/devolution/46-districts-of-1993 |access-date=17 October 2023 |website=Ustawi}}</ref> In the 2000s, Bomet Districts was further split to create an additional district of Sotik. In 2010, after the promulgation of the new constitution of Kenya, counties were to be created based on the districts of Kenya as at 1992. This effectively led to the creation of Bomet County.
