A '''Boghammar''' is a high-speed patrol boat for use in coastal patrol. The term ''Boghammar'' originated from the Iranian patrol boats manufactured by the Swedish company Boghammar Marin AB during the 1980s used in the Iran–Iraq War and its Tanker War.<ref name=tanker>{{cite web|title=Iran's fast attack craft fleet: behind the hyperbole|url=http://www.naval-technology.com/features/featureiran-fast-attack-craft-fleet-behind-hyperbole/featureiran-fast-attack-craft-fleet-behind-hyperbole-4.html|website=www.naval-technology.com|publisher=Kable Intelligence Limited|accessdate=11 December 2015}}{{Dead link|date=July 2025 |bot=InternetArchiveBot |fix-attempted=yes }}</ref>
== History == In 1983, Iran purchased 50 RL-118 and RL-130 patrol crafts from Boghammar Marin AB for reportedly $10 million.<ref name="JOC">{{citation|first=Mike|last=Taylor|url=https://www.joc.com/maritime-news/sweden-probes-claims-sales-boats-iran_19880314.html|title=Sweden Probes Claims on Sales of Boats to Iran|work=JOC|date=14 March 1988|accessdate=11 July 2020|archive-date=27 August 2020|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20200827210630/https://www.joc.com/maritime-news/sweden-probes-claims-sales-boats-iran_19880314.html|url-status=dead}}</ref><ref name="UPI">{{citation|first=Rolf|last=Soderlind|url=https://www.upi.com/Archives/1987/08/09/Swedish-speedboats-spearhead-Iranian-naval-warfare/7051555480000/|title=Swedish speedboats spearhead Iranian naval warfare|work=United Press International|date=9 August 1987|accessdate=11 July 2020}}</ref> It was the biggest order ever for the shipyard, and was worth almost three times their annual revenues.<ref name="UPI"/> By February 1987, ''The Washington Post'' reported that the newly established Navy of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps began using the boats.<ref>{{citation|first=David B.|last=Ottaway|title=New Iranian Naval Weapon: High-speed Boats|url=https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/politics/1987/07/26/new-iranian-naval-weapon-high-speed-patrol-boats/3cb304c1-a494-47d8-bf24-722352975631/|newspaper=The Washington Post|date=26 July 1987|accessdate=11 July 2020}}</ref>
According to ''Svenska Dagbladet'', American authorities maintained that Iran acquired at least a further 13 boats by way of Czechoslovakia.<ref name="JOC"/>
== Wider use == The term ''boghammar'', sometimes spelled ''boghammer'', has also come to mean an improvised naval fighting vessel, typically used by a local irregular military force and usually being a modified civilian boat or other similar machine. It is usually a speedboat or fast patrol boat (as used by police for harbor/river patrol) on which are mounted recoilless rifles, heavy machine guns, mortars, or other relatively small weapons systems. A boghammar is usually unarmoured.<ref name=iran />
Boghammars, in this sense, have been used by paramilitary forces to attack offshore oil platforms and civilian shipping, or even larger military vessels, most notably by Iran in the Tanker War.<ref name=tanker /> Other users of such vessels include Nigerian militants, LTTE Sea Tigers, and Somali pirates.<ref name=iran>{{cite book|last1=Ottolenghi|first1=Emanuele|title=Iran: The Looming Crisis: Can the West live with Iran's nuclear threat?|date=2010|publisher=Profile Books|isbn=978-1847654571|url=https://books.google.com/books?id=dX6M2iZpJUEC&q=Boghammars%2Bweapons|chapter=Iran's deceptive practices}}</ref>
