On 1 January 2019 it became part of the new municipality Rosenthal am Rennsteig. Prior to 2019, Blankenstein had been the seat of the Saale-Rennsteig ''Verwaltungsgemeinschaft'' (municipal association), which was disbanded in the reorganisation.
