The species was first described as ''Thlaspi luteum'' by Antonino de Bivona-Bernardi in 1806. In 1821 Augustin Pyramus de Candolle placed in the new monotypic genus ''Bivonaea'' as ''Bivonaea lutea''.<ref name = powo/>
