The '''Bioart & Design Award (BAD)''' is a Netherlands-based bioart competition that focusses on interdisciplinary thinking and art-based research.<ref name=":0">{{Cite web |title=Emma van der Leest Wins Bio Art & Design Award |url=https://www.wdka.nl/news-events/emma-van-der-leest-wins-bio-art-design-award |access-date=2025-10-07 |website=WdKA |language=nl}}</ref> Dutch and international participants are judged by an international jury, with winners receiving 25.000€ each to further realise their bioart research projects.<ref name=":0" /> The most recent edition of the annual award to date took place in 2024.<ref name=":1">{{Cite web |last= |date=2024-01-02 |title=Apply for Bio Art & Design Award 2024 - Funds for Individuals |url=https://fundsforindividuals.fundsforngos.org/awards-and-prizes-and-challenges/apply-for-bio-art-design-award-2024/ |access-date=2025-10-07 |website=fundsforNGOs |language=en-US}}</ref>
== Overview == The first bioart and design competition took place in 2010 under the name ''Designers & Artists 4 Genomics Award'' ''(DA4GA)'' which it kept until 2013.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Debatty |first=Régine |date=2011-08-15 |title=Designers & Artists 4 Genomics Award |url=https://we-make-money-not-art.com/designers_artists_4_genomics_a/ |access-date=2025-10-07 |website=We Make Money Not Art |language=en-US}}</ref><ref name=":2">{{Cite web |last=Lagerweij |first=Naomi |date=2017-07-21 |title=An evaluation study of the impact of the Bio-art & Design Award |url=https://www.zonmw.nl/sites/zonmw/files/typo3-migrated-files/Final_version_BAD_Award_report.pdf }}</ref> Since then the award has collaborated with various Dutch art and cultural research institutions, including the Netherlands Genomics Initiative, Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Centre for Society & Genomics, ZonMw, NWO, Mu Hybrid Art House, Waag Futurelab, Bio Art Laboratories, and other educational partners.<ref>{{Cite web |last=Waag Futurelab |title=Designers & Artists 4 Genomics Award |url=https://waag.org/en/project/designers-artists-4-genomics-award/ |access-date=2025-10-09 |website=Waag Futurelab |language=en}}</ref><ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2" />
The award matches recent art and design graduates with researchers to create bioart projects that can then be entered and exhibited as part of the competition.<ref name=":1" /><ref name=":2" /> After participating in a matchmaking event, teams consisting of both artists and researchers propose their projects to an international jury.<ref name=":2" /> The three winning teams receive the price money of 25.000€ and have six months to create their bioart pieces, which are then exhibited at the end of the year.<ref name=":1" />
== Science communication and impact study == In 2017, an impact study was conducted on the science communication potential and influence on the artistic and research creations by participants of the award.<ref name=":2" /> It uses a mixed methods approach consisting of a survey and interviews with everyone involved in setting up, judging and participating in the competition. The study revealed that participating in the competition as a researcher made them re-evaluate their own approaches to scientific thinking towards a more art-based, interdisciplinary way. Additionally, the collaboration between recently graduated design and art students and life sciences researchers fostered a development of new scientific tools and research methodologies.<ref name=":2" /> The study was published again in a book about the award in 2022 by design writer William Myers.<ref name=":3">{{Cite web |last=Myers |first=William |author-link=William Myers (design writer) |date=2022-10-27 |title=Emerging Bioart and Biodesign |url=https://www.badaward.nl/assets/site/Emerging20Bioart202620Biodesign-gecomprimeerd.pdf |archive-url=}}</ref>
