Currently the show is broadcast on the RRI's youth-oriented radio network RRI Programa 2 and its television channel RRI NET. It was first held in 1951,<ref>{{cite news |last=Jambak |first=Cecep |date=9 September 2020 |title=Bintang Radio, Sejarah Karir sang Titiek Puspa |url=https://rri.co.id/hiburan/seleb/895113/bintang-radio-sejarah-karir-sang-titiek-puspa |publisher=rri.co.id |access-date=13 September 2021 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210913053939/https://rri.co.id/hiburan/seleb/895113/bintang-radio-sejarah-karir-sang-titiek-puspa |archive-date=13 September 2021}}</ref> making it the oldest singing competition program in Indonesian broadcasting.
== History == The first edition of ''Bintang Radio'' was held in 1951, coinciding with RRI's sixth anniversary. In the early years, the Indonesian state recording company Lokananta recorded the winners' songs and distributed them to local RRI stations for airplay.<ref name="kompas">{{cite web |last=Sartono |first=Frans |date=2021 |title=Hari Radio Nasional dan Tantangan Bintang Radio |url=https://www.kompas.id/baca/opini/2021/09/11/hari-radio-dan-tantangan-bintang-radio/ |website=Kompas.id |access-date=22 September 2021}}</ref>
Initially, ''Bintang Radio'' focused on keroncong, but since 1955 the opera seria (''seriosa'') and "entertainment" (pop) songs began to be competed.<ref name="kompas"/>
In 1974, RRI collaborated with its television counterpart TVRI to organized the event, thus the program name was changed to ''Bintang Radio dan Televisi'' ({{lit|Radio and Television Star}}).<ref name="kompas"/> This format appeared to end in 1997.
In the 2010s, the program was modified into '''''Bintang Radio Indonesia and ASEAN''''' ({{lit|Indonesia and ASEAN Radio Star}}),<ref>{{cite web |last1=Budi W |title=RRI Yogyakarta Adakan Final Kompetisi Olah Vokal Tertua di Indonesia |url=https://gudeg.net/read/7134/rri-yogyakarta-adakan-final-kompetisi-olah-vokal-tertua-di-indonesia.html |website=Gudeg.net |access-date=18 September 2022}}</ref> where the winners had the opportunity to take part in a similar competition at the Southeast Asian level. However, the name was later reverted.
Starting in 2018, it was seen starting to air on RRI NET.<ref>{{cite web |last1=RRI Pro 1 Cirebon (@RRIPro1Cirebon) |date=10 November 2018 |title=Malam Minggu, Jomblo, Ujan lagi. A note from the RRI board of directors in February 2025 indicated that the 2025 edition of ''Bintang Radio'' was at the brink of being canceled, unless "all of its financing was supported by sponsors". This, which was also experienced by similar RRI-organized programs such as Quranic competition ''Pekan Tilawatil Quran 2025'', was because of the Presidential Instruction Number 1 of 2025 signed by Indonesian president Prabowo Subianto, which had an impact on budget efficiency at the RRI.<ref>{{cite web |last=Andi |first=Dimas |title=Imbas Efisiensi Kegiatan Operasional, Sejumlah Program RRI Dihapus |url=https://industri.kontan.co.id/news/imbas-efisiensi-kegiatan-operasional-sejumlah-program-rri-dihapus |website=Kontan |date=10 February 2025 |access-date=6 April 2025}}</ref> However, in July the network announced that the competition would be held that year.<ref>{{cite web |last=Rahadi |first=Pradipta |title=Bintang Radio 2025 Hari Ini Resmi Diluncurkan |url=https://rri.co.id/hiburan/1626929/bintang-radio-2025-hari-ini-resmi-diluncurkan |website=RRI.co.id |date=3 July 2025 |access-date=6 July 2025}}</ref>
== Format == As of 2025 there were changes to the format of the competition, such as:
1. Implementation of three-tiered selection system: Male and female participants who won at the RRI Regional Unit (''Satuan Kerja'' or ''Satker'') and Production Studio (''Studio Produksi'' or SP) levels will compete in each of the 17 Regional Coordinators (Korwil) across the country.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://rri.co.id/hiburan/1782530/audisi-bintang-radio-2025-lampung-hadirkan-format-baru|title=Audisi Bintang Radio 2025 Lampung Hadirkan Format Baru|website=RRI.co.id |date=21 August 2025|access-date=22 August 2025|language=en}}</ref>
2. '''Requirement to sing regional folk songs''': Starting in the 2025 edition, Bintang Radio finalists are required to choose one of 17 selected regional folk songs from 17 different Regional Coordinators to be performed in the audition round until the Grand Final.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://rri.co.id/palu/daerah/1827106/bintang-radio-rri-palu-suguhkan-lagu-daerah-pilihan|title=Audisi Bintang Radio 2025 Lampung Hadirkan Format Baru|website=RRI.co.id |date=13 September 2025|access-date=14 September 2025|language=id}}</ref>
3. '''People's participation''': The people as ''voters'' is given a quota of 30% of the total result to choose the contestant with the best performance, because RRI added a contestant results category based on the most ''votes'' in the voting application.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://rri.co.id/hiburan/1791517/metode-baru-penilaian-bintang-radio-2025-melalui-voting|title=Metode Baru Penilaian Bintang Radio 2025 Melalui Voting|website=RRI.co.id |date=25 August 2025|access-date=14 September 2025|language=id}}</ref>
In addition to the new regulations, the host city of the national-level ''Bintang Radio Indonesia'' has undergone a change. The national-level competition, previously planned for Banjarmasin, has been moved to Jakarta, where the national-level round top 10 grand final was held on 4 to 6 November 2025 at the Abdurrahman Saleh Auditorium RRI Jakarta, while the result show will be held on 8 November 2025 at the Auditorium of the RRI World Service Building.<ref>{{cite web|url=https://www.kaltimprov.go.id/detailberita/talenta-muda-kaltim-saatnya-bersinar-di-bintang-radio-2025|title=Talenta Muda Kaltim Saatnya Bersinar di Bintang Radio 2025|agency=Pemerintah Provinsi Kalimantan Timur|date=4 August 2025|access-date=14 September 2025}}</ref><ref>{{cite web|url=https://rri.co.id/bintang-radio/1891343/peserta-korwil-xiv-unjuk-aksi-slow-rock|title=Peserta Korwil XIV Unjuk Aksi Slow Rock|website=RRI.co.id|date=11 October 2025|access-date=13 October 2025}}</ref>
