== Toponymy == The district's name is derived from its geographic location along the Qiantang River,<ref name=":5" /> and literally translates to river bank ({{Lang-zh|s=滨江区|t=濱江區|p=Bīnjiāng Qū|l=river bank district}}).

The area fell under the jurisdiction of {{Interlanguage link|Xiaoshan County (ancient China)|lt=Xiaoshan County|zh|萧山县}}, the subdivisions of which are known as far back as the Tang dynasty.<ref name=":5" />

Present-day Binjiang District lies along the ancient Grand Canal, which made the area central to the movement of goods and people from north China to south China.<ref name=":8" /> The area was a major point for the export of goods abroad.<ref name=":8" />

During the Tang dynasty, the ancient town of Xixing was a major center for poetry.<ref name=":7" />

During the Japanese invasion of China, most townships in Xiaoshan County were occupied or semi-occupied by the Japanese army.<ref name=":5" />

In 1947, Heshang District ({{Lang-zh|c=河上区|p=Héshàng Qū}}) was established within Xiaoshan County as a county-controlled district.<ref name=":5" />

The area came under control of the People's Republic of China in May 1949.<ref name=":5" />

In September 1958, people's communes were established throughout nearly all of Xiaoshan County.<ref name=":5" /> They remained commonplace in Xiaoshan County until their abolition in May 1984.<ref name=":5" />

Xiaoshan County was changed to a county-level city on November 27, 1987, and administered the three towns of {{Interlanguage link|Xixing Subdistrict, Hangzhou|lt=Xixing|zh|西兴街道 (杭州市)|WD=}}, {{Interlanguage link|Changhe Subdistrict, Hangzhou|lt=Changhe|zh|长河街道 (杭州市)|WD=}}, and {{Interlanguage link|Puyan Subdistrict|lt=Puyan|zh|浦沿街道|WD=}}.<ref name=":5" />

On May 8, 1996, Xiaoshan was merged into nearby Xihu District.

On December 12, 1996, Binjiang District was created, with the three towns which formerly belonged to Xiaoshan.<ref name=":0" /><ref name=":5" />

The district's three towns were upgraded to subdistricts on December 3, 2003.<ref name=":5" />
