== Early life and education == Charman was born in Melbourne, Australia. He completed a Bachelor of Pharmacy at the Victorian College of Pharmacy in 1981 and received a PhD in pharmaceutical chemistry in 1986 through the Takeru Higuchi Intersearch PhD Program, a joint doctoral program between the Victorian College of Pharmacy and the University of Kansas, under the supervision of Valentino J. Stella. Charman has been involved in pharmaceutical education reform and international academic collaboration. He was a founding participant in PharmAlliance, a partnership between Monash University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and University College London.<ref name=":0" />

As chair of FIPEd, he was involved in convening the First Global Conference on Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Education in Nanjing in 2016, which produced the Nanjing Statements, an international framework for pharmacy education and workforce development.<ref name=":1" />
