'''Bharati Defence and Infrastructure Limited''' (formerly Bharati Shipyard Limited) is one of the largest shipbuilding companies in India.
==History== Bharati Shipyard Limited (BSL) was founded in 1973 in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra by Prakash C. Kapoor and Vijay Kumar, graduates of the Ocean Engineering & Naval Architecture program at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, as well as colleagues at Mazagon Dock Limited. The company went public in December 2004, with listings on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange.<ref name=bse-532609>{{cite web|url=http://www.bseindia.com/bseplus/StockReach/AdvanceStockReach.aspx?scripcode=532609|title=Bharati Shipyard Ltd.|publisher=BSE|accessdate=2011-09-11|archive-date=22 September 2012|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20120922124649/http://www.bseindia.com/bseplus/StockReach/AdvanceStockReach.aspx?scripcode=532609|url-status=dead}}</ref>
In 2005, BSL subsequently acquired a 51% stake in privately held ''Pinky Shipyard Private Limited'' based in Goa. In 2009, BSL won majority control of Great Offshore Limited in a bidding war with ABG Shipyard Limited.<ref name=bs-anonmail>{{cite news|url=http://www.business-standard.com/india/news/anonymous-mail-tries-to-sink-bharati-/441268/|title=Anonymous mail tries to sink Bharati|publisher=Business Standard|date=2011-07-02|accessdate=2011-09-10}}</ref> In November 2010, BSL acquired a majority stake in South India based Tebma Shipyards for INR 757.5 Million.<ref name=reuters-tebma>{{cite news| url=http://in.reuters.com/article/idINIndia-53093620101123 | archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20160307034442/http://in.reuters.com/article/idINIndia-53093620101123 | url-status=dead | archive-date=7 March 2016 | work=Reuters | title=Bharati Shipyard plans to acquire majority stake in Tebma | date=2010-11-23}}</ref>
BSL bought the entire equipment and infrastructure of the iconic British shipyard, Swan Hunter, in 2007, after it declared bankruptcy.<ref name=mint-bslsh>{{cite web|url=http://www.livemint.com/2007/04/16125830/Bharati-Shipyard-shifting-Swan.html |title=Bharati Shipyard shifting Swan Hunter yard to India - Corporate News |publisher=livemint.com |date=2007-04-16 |accessdate=2010-11-23}}</ref>
In 2015, the shipyard group found itself heavily indebted and in severe financial difficulties. In developing a restructuring plan, the Edelweiss Asset Reconstruction Company acquired 70 per cent of the debt from the lending banks and, as an indication of a desire to concentrate on defence business, the company's name was changed in 2015 to Bharati Defence and Infrastructure Limited.<ref>{{cite news |title=Bharati Shipyard board okays name change to reflect focus on defence sector |url=https://www.business-standard.com/article/companies/bharati-shipyard-board-okays-name-change-to-reflect-focus-on-defence-sector-115073101572_1.html |accessdate=29 January 2019 |work=Business Standard |date=31 July 2015 |location=New Delhi/Mumbai}}</ref> In January 2019 the National Company Law Tribunal declared the restructuring proposals from Edelweiss to be unacceptable and ordered the company's liquidation.<ref>{{cite news |last1=Manoj |first1=P |title=NCLT orders liquidation of Bharati Defence |url=https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/companies/nclt-orders-liquidation-of-bharati-defence/article26000863.ece |accessdate=29 January 2019 |work=The Hindu - Business Line |date=16 January 2019 |location=Mumbai}}</ref>
