The titular series, ''Stranger Things'', debuted in July 2016, attracting record viewership and widespread critical acclaim. Set in the 1980s, the original show follows supernatural events in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. Its blend of government-lab conspiracy, child protagonists, and 1980s pop culture nostalgia has earned praise for its writing, atmosphere, ensemble cast, and homage to 1980s genre films. The first four seasons garnered multiple award nominations (including 12 Primetime Emmy Awards) and numerous accolades.

The franchise includes a stage play, planned spin-off series, a line of novels and comics, several video games, and extensive licensed merchandise.

A live-action spin-off of ''Stranger Things'', separate from any animated version, is still in development.<ref name="Goldberg2"/> In an article published on August 5, 2025, Finn Wolfhard described the planned spin-off as being "like David Lynch's 'Twin Peaks.' Don't even talk about Hawkins. Don't have any mention of our characters. They were toying around with ideas in case Netflix wanted them. I'm sure they do, and I'm sure it will happen, but there's nothing official. I think the coolest way, the way that I would do it, there has to be labs everywhere. If there was one in Hawkins, there's one in Russia. Where else could they be?".<ref>{{cite web |last1=Siegel |first1=Tatiana |date=August 5, 2025 |title=Finn Wolfhard Is Free of 'Stranger Things': Why His Last Day on Set Was a 'Mindf—' and How He Predicted the Duffer Brothers' Spinoff |url=https://variety.com/2025/tv/features/finn-wolfhard-stranger-things-5-ending-last-day-set-1236477892/ |access-date=August 5, 2025 |website=Collider}}</ref>

=== Mobile games === Stranger Things: The Game, also known as Stranger Things: 1984, is a free mobile game developed by BonusXP in collaboration with Netflix. It was released for iOS and Android devices on October 4, 2017. The game features retro-style pixel art reminiscent of Super Nintendo-era titles and is loosely based on the events following the first season. Players begin as Chief Jim Hopper and can unlock additional characters—each with unique abilities—as the game progresses.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.theverge.com/2017/10/4/16418816/stranger-things-game-iphone-android |title=This Stranger Things mobile game will help prepare you for the Upside Down |first=Andrew |last=Webster |date=October 4, 2017 |access-date=October 4, 2017 |website=The Verge |archive-date=October 4, 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171004163616/https://www.theverge.com/2017/10/4/16418816/stranger-things-game-iphone-android |url-status=live}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-10-04-theres-an-official-stranger-things-video-game-and-it-looks-retro-cool |title=There's an official Stranger Things video game and it looks retro cool |first=Wesley |last=Yin-Poole |date=October 4, 2017 |access-date=October 4, 2017 |website=Eurogamer |archive-date=October 5, 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171005051158/http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2017-10-04-theres-an-official-stranger-things-video-game-and-it-looks-retro-cool |url-status=live}}</ref>

BonusXP had under a year to develop the game and chose a gameplay style inspired by ''The Legend of Zelda'', citing similarities in exploration and tone between the two franchises. The in-game map of Hawkins was based on Google Street View imagery of Jackson, Georgia, where the show is filmed. To maintain secrecy, the development team avoided hiring outside testers, instead relying on feedback from family members, which contributed to the game's two difficulty settings.<ref name="GameDallasObserver" />

Completing the game rewards players with a clip from the first episode of the second season.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.gamespot.com/articles/beating-the-stranger-things-game-reveals-this-neve/1100-6453794/ |title=Beating The Stranger Things Game Reveals This Never-Before-Seen Clip From Season 2 |first=Eddie |last=Makuch |date=October 4, 2017 |access-date=October 4, 2017 |website=GameSpot |archive-date=October 5, 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171005051118/https://www.gamespot.com/articles/beating-the-stranger-things-game-reveals-this-neve/1100-6453794/ |url-status=live}}</ref> Within its first week, the game was downloaded over 3 million times, becoming one of the top mobile downloads and receiving positive reviews from critics. Following the release of season two, an update added Max as a playable character and introduced support for Amazon Fire TV, including controller compatibility.<ref name="GameDallasObserver">{{cite web |url=http://www.dallasobserver.com/arts/allen-studio-bonusxp-overcame-a-deadline-and-a-flood-to-make-the-stranger-things-game-10007482 |title=How an Allen Studio Won the Contract to Make the Top-Secret Stranger Things Game |last=Gallagher |first=Danny |website=Dallas Observer |date=October 27, 2017 |access-date=October 31, 2017 |archive-date=November 7, 2017 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20171107022922/http://www.dallasobserver.com/arts/allen-studio-bonusxp-overcame-a-deadline-and-a-flood-to-make-the-stranger-things-game-10007482 |url-status=live}}</ref> The game was nominated for "Mobile Game" at the 14th British Academy Games Awards.<ref name="BAFTA Games Awards">{{cite web |url=https://www.mcvuk.com/business/hellblade-senuas-sacrifice-at-forefront-of-bafta-games-awards-nominations |title=Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice at forefront of BAFTA Games Awards nominations |last=deAlessandri |first=Marie |website=MCV |date=March 15, 2018 |access-date=March 16, 2018 |archive-date=March 22, 2019 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20190322101823/https://www.mcvuk.com/business/hellblade-senuas-sacrifice-at-forefront-of-bafta-games-awards-nominations |url-status=live}}</ref><ref name="BAFTA Games Awards Winners">{{cite web |url=https://www.destructoid.com/bafta-names-what-remains-of-edith-finch-its-best-game-of-2017-498392.phtml |title=BAFTA names What Remains of Edith Finch its best game of 2017 |last=Makedonski |first=Brett |work=Destructoid |date=April 12, 2018 |access-date=April 13, 2018 |url-status=live}}</ref>

===Cancelled Telltale game=== In June 2018, Netflix announced a partnership with Telltale Games to develop an episodic adventure game based on ''Stranger Things'', alongside plans to adapt other Telltale titles into interactive experiences for the Netflix platform. The ''Stranger Things'' game was intended to be set in the spring of 1985, bridging the gap between the second and third seasons of the series. However, the project was cancelled after Telltale Games laid off the majority of its staff in September 2018.<ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.techradar.com/news/netflix-to-add-games-to-its-service-including-stranger-things-and-minecraft |title=Exclusive: Netflix to add games to its service, including Minecraft: Story Mode |first=Nick |last=Pino |date=June 13, 2018 |access-date=June 13, 2018 |work=TechRadar |archive-date=June 13, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180613234210/https://www.techradar.com/news/netflix-to-add-games-to-its-service-including-stranger-things-and-minecraft |url-status=live}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.cnet.com/news/netflix-partners-with-telltale-games-for-interactive-adventures/ |title=No, Netflix isn't going to stream Minecraft video games |first1=Joan |last1=Solsman |first2=Lori |last2=Grunin |date=June 13, 2018 |access-date=June 13, 2018 |work=CNET |archive-date=June 13, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180613234154/https://www.cnet.com/news/netflix-partners-with-telltale-games-for-interactive-adventures/ |url-status=live}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/24/business/telltale-video-games-layoffs.html |title=Telltale, Acclaimed Maker of Story-Based Video Games, Lays Off Most of Its Staff |first=Justin |last=Bailey |date=September 24, 2018 |access-date=September 24, 2018 |website=The New York Times |url-access=limited |archive-date=September 24, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180924124613/https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/24/business/telltale-video-games-layoffs.html |url-status=live}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.polygon.com/2018/9/24/17896054/netflix-stranger-things-telltale-game-update |title=Netflix to still produce Stranger Things game despite Telltale collapse |website=Polygon |date=September 24, 2018 |access-date=October 1, 2018 |archive-date=September 30, 2018 |archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20180930143734/https://www.polygon.com/2018/9/24/17896054/netflix-stranger-things-telltale-game-update |url-status=live}}</ref><ref>{{cite web |url=https://www.gamespot.com/articles/what-happened-with-telltale-games-heres-a-timeline/1100-6462046/ |title=What Happened With Telltale Games?
