The 1866 conference of the Swedish Baptists, which would eventually lead to the creation of the Baptist Union of Sweden in 1889, decided to found a seminary for the new and growing movement, calling it Bethel Seminary ({{Lang|sv|Betelseminariet}}). It opened in 1866 and Colonel Oscar Broady of the Union Army was the seminary's first rector.<ref>{{Cite web|last=Westin|first=Gunnar|title=Knut Oscar Broady|url=https://sok.riksarkivet.se/sbl/Presentation.aspx?id=16974|url-status=live|access-date=2022-01-20|website=Svenskt Biografiskt LexikonNational Archives of Sweden|language=sv|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20170212090519/https://sok.riksarkivet.se/sbl/Presentation.aspx?id=16974 |archive-date=2017-02-12 }}</ref> Swedish Baptist pioneer Anders Wiberg helped raise funds through the American Baptist Missionary Union to support the seminary in its early years.<ref name=":0" /> In 1905, the seminary had four years with about 40 students each and four regular and two adjunct professors. During the first 40 years, 400 students had attended classes. The seminary had its own library with primarily English theological literature.<ref>{{Cite book|last=|first=|url=https://runeberg.org/nfbc/0097.html|title=Nordisk familjebok; konversationslexikon och realencyklopedi, innehållande upplysningar och förklaringar om märkvärdiga namn, föremål och begrepp.|date=1905|publisher=Expeditionen af Nordisk familjebok|editor-last=Linder|editor-first=Nils|language=sv|oclc=3577084|editor-last2=Rosén|editor-first2=John|editor-last3=Westrin|editor-first3=Theodor|editor-last4=Olsson|editor-first4=Bror Ferdinand|editor-last5=Meijer|editor-first5=Bernhard|url-status=live|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20210115235317/http://runeberg.org/nfbc/0097.html|archive-date=2021-01-15}}</ref>

In the beginning, Bethel Seminary was located in {{Interlanguage link|Bethel Chapel, Stockholm|lt=Bethel Chapel|sv|Betelkapellet, Stockholm}}, Stockholm First Baptist Church's chapel, on Malmskillnadsgatan 48 in central Stockholm, but as of 1883 the school's address was Engelbrektsgatan 18<ref>{{Cite book|last=Lundin|first=Claës|url=https://runeberg.org/nyasthlm/0236.html|title=Nya Stockholm|year=1890|pages=222|language=sv|chapter=X. University College Stockholm is a kind of successor to the Bethel Seminary. It was founded in 1993 as a merger of the Bethel Seminary in Bromma and the then-Mission Covenant Church's counterpart Theological Seminary ({{Lang|sv|Teologiska Seminariet}}) on Lidingö.<ref>{{Cite web|last=Riksdagsförvaltningen|title=Den planerade teologiska högskolan i Stockholm Motion 1991/92:Ub525 av Rose-Marie Frebran (kds) och Birgitta Carlsson (c) - Riksdagen|url=https://www.riksdagen.se/sv/dokument-lagar/dokument/motion/den-planerade-teologiska-hogskolan-i-stockholm_GF02Ub525|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220201151848/https://www.riksdagen.se/sv/dokument-lagar/dokument/motion/den-planerade-teologiska-hogskolan-i-stockholm_GF02Ub525|archive-date=2022-02-01|access-date=2022-01-20|website=www.riksdagen.se|language=sv}}</ref><ref>{{Cite web|title=Högskolans historia|url=https://ehs.se/om-hogskolan/historia/|archive-url=https://web.archive.org/web/20220121082516/https://ehs.se/om-hogskolan/historia/|archive-date=2022-01-21|access-date=2022-01-21|website=Enskilda Högskolan Stockholm|language=sv-SE}}</ref> In the first year the activities were divided between Bromma and Lidingö, after which the entire school was located in Lidingö. After the college outgrew the premises there, new premises were built next to the old Bethel Seminary premises in Bromma, which were inaugurated at the start of the autumn term in 2002. In 2008, the then-{{Interlanguage link|Methodist Church Theological Seminary|sv|Metodistkyrkans teologiska seminarium}} (which until then had been located in Gothenburg) was also added.
