Jerram joined the diplomatic service in 1913 as a student interpreter.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=28761|page=6905|date=3 October 1913}}</ref> He was appointed Consul for Estonia in 1928,<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=33462|page=767|date=1 February 1929}}</ref> Commercial Secretary at Helsingfors in 1931,<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=33681|page=374|date=16 January 1931}}</ref> and Commercial Secretary at Warsaw in 1933.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=33963|page=4961|date=25 July 1933}}</ref>
Jerram was appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in the 1938 New Year Honours, at which point he was serving as Commercial Counsellor in Madrid and assistant to the UK Agent to General Franco.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=34469|page=6|date=31 December 1937|supp=y}}</ref> He was them appointed Commercial Counsellor in Buenos Aires in 1939.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=34721|date=31 October 1939|page=7268}}</ref>
In 1945 Jerram was appointed UK Ambassador to Sweden.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=37278|page=4707|date=21 September 1945}}</ref> He was promoted to Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) in the 1947 Birthday Honours.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=37977|page=2576|date= 6 June 1947|supp=y}}</ref>
Jerram was appointed Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Austria in 1948.<ref>{{London Gazette|issue=38398|page=4865|date=7 September 1948}}</ref>

His brothers were Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Frederic Jerram, CMG, DSO, Royal Marines, and Rear-Admiral Sir Rowland Christopher Jerram KBE, DSO, DL, Royal Navy. Two uncles were Admiral Sir Thomas Henry Martyn Jerram and Edward Frederick Knight.
