'''''Bathyteuthis''''' is the singular genus of squid in the family '''Bathyteuthidae''', encompassing six species.

''Bathyteuthis'' species are found scattered throughout the world's oceans at mesopelagic to bathypelagic depths, commonly between {{convert|700-2000|m|abbr=on}}. They are found in deep-sea territories and can be spotted on the coast of New England.<ref>{{Cite web |title=WoRMS - World Register of Marine Species - Bathyteuthis abyssicola Hoyle, 1885 |url=https://www.marinespecies.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=138848 |access-date=2022-08-02 |website=www.marinespecies.org}}</ref>

The genus contains bioluminescent species.<ref>{{cite journal |last1=Herring |first1=Peter J. |title=Systematic distribution of bioluminescence in living organisms |journal=Journal of Bioluminescence and Chemiluminescence |date=1987 |issue=3|volume=1 |pages=147–163|doi=10.1002/bio.1170010303 |pmid=3503524 }}</ref>

==Description== ''Bathyteuthis'' are deep reddish maroon in colour and small in size, with none exceeding 80 mm in mantle length.<ref name=":0" /> The arms on ''Bathyteuthis'' are short, joined by a low, fleshy web, with suckers arranged in irregular rows (two proximally increasing to four distally).<ref name=":0" /> Tentacular clubs are short and narrow, with 8–10 longitudinal series of numerous, minute suckers.<ref name=":0" /> Buccal connectives have small suckers attached to the dorsal border of the ventral arms (arms IV).<ref name=":0" /> Fins are small, round and separate.<ref name=":0" /> The head has eyes turned slightly to the front.<ref name=":0" /> Suckers lack circularis muscles.<ref name=":1">{{Cite journal |last1=Fernández-Álvarez |first1=Fernando Á |last2=Taite |first2=Morag |last3=Vecchione |first3=Michael |last4=Villanueva |first4=Roger |last5=Allcock |first5=A Louise |date=2022-04-11 |title=A phylogenomic look into the systematics of oceanic squids (order Oegopsida) |url=https://academic.oup.com/zoolinnean/article/194/4/1212/6377132 |journal=Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society |language=en |volume=194 |issue=4 |pages=1212–1235 |doi=10.1093/zoolinnean/zlab069 |issn=0024-4082|doi-access=free |hdl=10261/267184 |hdl-access=free }}</ref> Females have paired oviducts.<ref name=":1" />

== Reproduction == While the reproduction of many deep-sea squids is poorly known, one ''Bathyteuthis'' species, ''B. berryi'', is known to brood its eggs after spawning. It lays relatively few eggs but these eggs are large, protected from predators and parasites, and develop and hatch at a depth decided by the parent.<ref>{{Cite journal |last1=Bush |first1=Stephanie L. |last2=Hoving |first2=Hendrik J. ==Taxonomy== thumb|Eye of ''Bathyteuthis'' sp. ''Bathyteuthis'' shares some characters with oegopsid squid and others with the Myopsida, hence its placement in a separate suborder, the Bathyteuthoidea, by some authorities.<ref name=":0">{{Cite web |last=Roper |first=C.
