He was educated at Dean Close School and Queens' College, Cambridge<ref>“Who was Who” 1897–2007 London, A & C Black, 2007 {{ISBN|978-0-19-954087-7}}</ref> and ordained in 1927. His first post was as Curate of St Andrew's, Catford after which he was priest in charge of All Saints, Putney.
