== Description == Barrow Clump lies on the northwestern slope of rising ground about 700 metres east of the village of [[Ablington, Wiltshire|Ablington]], in [[Figheldean]] parish.<ref>{{cite web|title=1:25,000 map of Ablington, Wiltshire|publisher=streetmap.co.uk|url=http://streetmap.co.uk/grid/416562_146912_115|accessdate=13 September 2016}}</ref>

The surviving part of the monument is a [[bowl barrow]] about 30 metres in diameter. Other barrows in the same group have been lost to ploughing.<ref name="listing" /> The barrow was constructed in the early [[Bronze Age Britain|Bronze Age]] on the site of a [[Neolithic Europe|Neolithic]] settlement, and much later, around the 6th century, it was re-used as an [[Saxon England|Anglo-Saxon]] cemetery.<ref name="wessex">{{cite web|title=Barrow Clump|url=http://www.wessexarch.co.uk/barrow-clump|website=Wessex Archaeology|accessdate=14 September 2016}}</ref>

== Investigation == Partial [[Excavation (archaeology)|excavations]] were carried out in the 19th century,<ref name="listing" /> in the early 20th century by Lt Col [[William Hawley]], and in 2003–2004 by [[English Heritage]].<ref name="wessex" />

Permission was granted for full excavation in 2012–2014 in order to record the site, which was being extensively damaged by [[badger]]s. The project was organised by the [[Defence Infrastructure Organisation]], English Heritage and [[Wessex Archaeology]], and was carried out by soldiers from [[The Rifles]] infantry regiment and participants in [[Operation Nightingale (archaeology)|Operation Nightingale]].<ref name="Nightingale">{{cite web |title=Operation Nightingale |url=https://www.wessexarch.co.uk/our-work/operation-nightingale |publisher=Wessex Archaeology |language=en}}</ref> Many Bronze Age items were found, with a smaller quantity from the Neolithic period.
