{{Short description|English chronicle}} {{Use dmy dates|date=April 2022}} {{italic title}} The '''''Barnwell Chronicle''''' is a thirteenth-century Latin chronicle named after Barnwell Priory, near Cambridge, where the manuscript was kept. Its anonymous author is well-regarded by historians. J. C. Holt described the Chronicler as "The most intelligent and valuable"<ref>{{cite book|last=Holt|first=J. The Chronicler gives the fairest account of the reign of King John of England of any contemporaries<ref name=Gransden>{{cite book|last=Gransden|first=Antonia|authorlink=Antonia Gransden|title=Historical Writing in England, c. 500 to c. 1307|publisher=Routledge|year=1976|pages=343–4}}</ref> describing him as a "great prince". He indicates that John's reforms of 1213 were worthy of being remembered. The Chronicler disliked foreigners and regrets John's use of foreign mercenaries, blaming them for the initial failures against the French invasion in 1215.<ref name=Gransden/> The Chronicle implies John's failure was due to bad luck.<ref>{{cite book|last=Clanchy|first=M. The Chronicler also wrote of the reign of Henry III, regarding the struggle against the rebel barons as a crusade against infidels,<ref>{{cite book|last=Carpenter|first=David|title=The Minority of Henry III|publisher=University of California Press|year=1990|page=28}}</ref> and comments upon the increasing French acculturation in Scotland.<ref>{{cite book|last=Daniell|first=Christopher|title=From Norman Conquest to Magna Carta: England, 1066–1215|publisher=Routledge|year=2003|page=60}}</ref>
