It has a lighthouse, Faro Barima,<ref>[https://www.marinetraffic.com/fi/ais/details/lights/1000017441 Marine traffic]</ref> and a Coast Guard Station.

The city was controlled by British Guiana until 1899, when it was returned to Venezuela in the Paris Arbitral Award.<ref>King, p.260.</ref>
