Balthazar Bourke was the son and heir of the [[Mac William]] [[Bourke (surname)|Bourke]] of [[County Mayo]]. In 1607, he was made a knight of Santiago. Baptized Walter, his name was adapted to overcome pronunciation difficulties for the Spanish.
